Andra Samelson is a multi-media artist who has exhibited extensively in galleries and museums throughout the United States and Europe. Her work explores the cosmic nature of ordinary objects in our everyday world and the way in which the microcosm and macrocosm mirror each other. Her outdoor sculpture Ephemeris is an imaginary celestial configuration whose mirrored stars and planets reflect the actual sky and its surroundings including those observing it. Her public artwork, Heaven on Earth, was commissioned by New Jersey Transit.
She has also used Buddhist iconography in her work, and several of her paintings were exhibited at the United Nations in response to the destruction of the colossal statues of Buddha in Bamiyan, Afghanistan. Her large-scale painting Bamiyan: A Continuum, on view in The Missing Peace, pays homage to these great works of art and the wisdom of Buddha's teaching which continues to flourish indestructibly.
