KIRSTEN BAHRS JANSSEN

Sculpture and installation artist Bahrs Janssen is a native Californian. Born Eurasian, the daughter of a commercial artist father and Kabuki dancer mother, her influences are attributed to a model upbringing in the golden landscape of opportunity and resources. Her work has a minimalist vision with conceptual content.

Educated and working as a public school art teacher, Bahrs Janssen’s work utilizes practical materials, labor, collaboration, and skill as integral elements to the concept of a piece.

Ranging from intimate sculptural works to large-scale pieces, Bahrs Janssen’s tactile work speaks about larger ideas in small digestible forms. Previous work involved the transformation of a family Christmas tree into a 100-foot sheet of paper, and measuring the depth of the Pacific Ocean with thread. The recent death of her mother and birth of her daughter instill her work with humanistic issues in which most anyone can relate.
