TYSEER BARAKAT

Palestinian artist Tyseer Barakat was born in Jabalya refugee camp in Gaza. He currently resides in Ramallah, West Bank. Barakat creates images using burned materials that suggest the cataclysm of the expulsion of his family from their homeland.

Barakat sees his art form as a reaffirmation of ancient Palestinian art. Ancient Iraqi, Canaanite, Phoenician, and Egyptian art are clearly present in his work on both the intuitive and studied levels. Much of his work is created by burning images on wood. He enhances the results by adding dyes. This negative/positive space relationship is also a form inherent to Arabic calligraphy. The figures in the images grow from the memory of the atmosphere of the refugee camp and his childhood.
