Mwkaiyama’s minimal paintings express a quietude and introspection. The work has a rare beauty; a fragile, ephemeral quality created by layers of vivid color seen through a thick covering of semi-transparent wax. Our lives are filled with color, but seldom do we have the opportunity to see color that is so pure and richly expressive. The thick layer of wax has a weight and three-dimensional presence that makes it almost sculptural. The works can be described as both painting and sculpture.
Considered in terms of light, Mwkaiyama’s paintings appear at their most beautiful in natural lightlight that is endlessly reflected back and forth from the interior to periphery of the painting.
The work is characterized by a sublimity, purity and concision which helps us attain a spiritual connection.
The artist states that he feels a sense of awe before nature. Mwkaiyama is a believer in the Shingon sect of Kukai Buddhism. He describes the quality of his life as living day to day, trying to create and maintain a humble faith in peace.
