Composer, pianist, sometime actor and model, futurist—more than 60 albums, one Grammy, one Oscar—Ryuichi Sakamoto has made a career for himself by playing everything from techno to light classical to bossa nova to opera. In 1987 the original score he co-composed for Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor won him an Oscar and a Grammy. A little more than 10 years later, his solo piano composition Energy Flow was a million-selling No. 1 hit in Japan. This summer Sakamoto released the CD Chasm.
