Van Bui is primarily an installation artist and a professor of art at the University of Tampa. He has created an impressive body of work with mixed media, small bronze studies and wall-mounted constructions. Van Bui has said that he uses art to bridge values from East and West. Van Bui has worked with orphans and special-needs children living in desperate conditions. His holistic philosophy of life brings a strong social perspective to his art.
Understated and suggestive, his angular sculptures and narrative installations also demonstrate his talent for creating unique textures by combining such materials as bronze, tar, wax, steel, aluminum, wood, rubber, rice and denim.
Conceptual pieces with American flag segments and triangles are frequent motifs; his content touches poignant issues like the passage of time, death and memories of life bridging two continents.
