Varejão creates complex wall-based works and dramatic, enigmatic installations that strive to reassemble cultural and historical narratives of her native Brazil. Varejão's oeuvre investigates the hybridism of Brazilian culture and draws upon a variety of sources that are figurative, decorative, theatrical, allegorical, biological, and popular. Her work invokes the baroque sensibility while at the same restating its language, reshaping it through highly inventive pictorial strategies.
Varejão explores culture as a living organism by creating her canvases as “bodies” comprised of densely layered images and viscous material. The “interior” of her canvases often ruptures violently out onto their smooth, cunningly painted, illusionistic surfaces, suggesting a subversion—glossy pretenses of history. Although seemingly representative of damage and assault, Varejão's works offer a pervading sense of vitality, revealing a richness and dynamism constantly present at the core of their existence.
